Carrying the Flame Forward: Mark Matlock Joins MissionConnexion Southwest
By Jake Embleton, Southwest Coordinator
In 1806, five Williams College students huddled in a field beneath a haystack during a thunderstorm in Williamstown, Massachusetts and prayed for the nations. That simple, desperate moment sparked the Haystack Prayer Revival, launching the first American student missions movement and laying the foundation for global missions efforts that would follow.
By the late 19th century, the fire had spread through the Student Volunteer Movement, mobilizing over 20,000 students to take the Gospel across the globe with the bold vision of “the evangelization of the world in this generation.” In 1946, the first ever Urbana took place and carried this torch to new generations, inviting young people to encounter God’s global heart and respond with surrendered lives.
That same spirit lives on today—through regional gatherings like MissionConnexion Southwest, where churches, mission agencies, students, and everyday believers come together to be informed, inspired, and mobilized for God’s global mission.
We are excited to announce that Mark Matlock—author, speaker, and trusted voice in spiritual formation and next-generation leadership—will be joining us as a featured speaker at this year’s MissionConnexion SW! Mark also has the distinguished honor of serving as a Senior Fellow at Barna and as the Executive Director of Urbana for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
Mark’s decades of experience with youth ministry, culture shaping, and guiding students into deep spiritual journeys make him a timely and powerful addition to this gathering. His voice speaks directly into the legacy of movements like Haystack, SVM, and Urbana—calling this generation not just to remember history, but to make it.
In addition to speaking at the main conference, Mark Matlock will also be presenting at Leadership Connexion, our pre-conference event designed for pastors, ministry leaders, and students. Leadership Connexion focuses on integrating best missions practices with proven leadership principles, helping leaders lead more effectively in a global context. Whether you’re a student stirred by God’s call, a church ready to send, or a leader seeking clarity in a complex world, come and be equipped. We are able to offer this event at only $45pp due to a generous donation!
