NW Welcomes Reid Saunders!

By Bill MacLeod, Director

This January we enter our 25th year as a ministry. It just seems like yesterday I was deliberating over a vision the Lord had given me in 1994 and what the Lord wanted (me) to do with it. Then, in 1999, when our own Luis Palau held his first of three Portland Festivals in downtown Waterfront Park, the Lord nudged me again…

As we were leaving the grounds, Luis unexpectedly emerged on the platform and prayed that God would start something of a revival in our little corner of the Northwest that would sweep across the country. Another Palau Portland CityFest took place in 2000 and a final one in 2008 as Portland Churches enthusiastically embraced both the Message and the messenger. But…

Not for another 17 years – in August 2025 – would there be another bold, in-person, united church proclamation of the gospel in Portland…

The role of the evangelist is essential in every society, not only to proclaim the Good News leading people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, but also to challenge the “capital C” Church to serve together in Unity, to themselves be salt and light!

This is why I am excited to welcome Reid Saunders to our MissionConnexion Northwest platform this January! He founded the Reid Saunders Association (RSA) in 2002, in Salem, Oregon and he has partnered with over 3,000 churches in 97 countries, to train 70,000 in how to share their faith, so that 5,000,000 people could hear the gospel, and 900,000 could make validated decisions for Christ.

With all the “shaking” going on in our world, and especially in Portland, what better person to exemplify our “unshaken” theme than an evangelist who enthusiastically yet calmly faces the world’s quaking by boldly proclaiming Jesus Christ!

To help us get better acquainted with Reid, here’s how he responded to my 4 questions…

  1. How did you come to follow Christ as your Savior?

At the age of 17 I put my faith and trust in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I was reading the Bible trying to find purpose and meaning in life and came to John 3:16. As I read this verse while sitting in my backyard I put my name in the place of world. “For God so loved (Reid)”. Moved by His love for me in sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for my sins and rise again from the grave I put my trust in Jesus. I remember that sunny California day in Petaluma like it was yesterday when I trusted Jesus as my Savior at 17. I knew then that God had called me to be an evangelist to the nations! Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  1. Were there any barriers you had to overcome or surrender, to come to the point of serving the Lord in the capacity you do now?

The Lord brought a great mentor and friend into my life, Luis Palau, who helped prepare and equip me to be an evangelist to the nations. The obstacle I faced as a young evangelist was, I had no clue how to start an evangelistic ministry. Being mentored and having an internship with Luis Palau helped me start the Reid Saunders Evangelistic Association in 2002.

  1. How do you see the Lord using you through your ministry to benefit and strengthen the local Church?

The Lord is using RSA to build up and strengthen the Body of Christ in two keyways:

Proclamation and Multiplication. We partner with local churches all over the world proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. Our focus is on the unreached areas of the world where there are 15 percent or less believers. For multiplication we build up the Body of Christ by training and equipping Christ followers to share Jesus with others.

  1. What would be 1 or 2 things you would want to leave with those attending MCNW ’26?

My prayer for those attending this year’s conference is for them to leave the conference “unshaken” in their role in the Great Commission and allowing Jesus to use their lives in a powerful way impacting their sphere of influence for Jesus Christ!

In any local church, perhaps only 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 believers would be called to the role of an evangelist. Yet, they are indispensable to the world and to the Church. If the Lord is calling you or someone you know to the vital role of evangelist, plan to come and speak with Reid personally and fulfill your calling. Plan now to attend MissionConnexion Northwest 2026, this coming January 16-17 at Sunset Church
