Introducing Dr. Warren Stewart
By Jake Embleton, Southwest Coordinator
When we launched MissionConnexion Southwest at Scottsdale Bible Church in 2021, we had no idea we were beginning what would become one of our most meaningful traditions. Each year, we invite a lead pastor from our city to deliver the opening message—a practice that has grown to include five current or former lead pastors, representing more than 100 combined years of pastoral leadership.
This year, we are honored and thrilled to welcome Dr. Warren Stewart as our opening keynote speaker for MissionConnexion Southwest, happening November 7–8.
Dr. Stewart began leading First Institutional Baptist Church in 1977 and served faithfully for an incredible 48 years, recently stepping down as lead pastor. To lead anything for nearly five decades is remarkable, but to do so with such consistency and impact—especially at a historic, predominantly African American church in downtown Phoenix—is truly inspiring.
Beyond the pulpit, Dr. Stewart has made a lasting impact in both the church and the broader community. He founded FIBCO Family Services, a nonprofit that serves underrepresented communities in Phoenix. He also played a pivotal role in the movement that led Arizona to officially recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a state holiday.
Dr. Stewart’s leadership has extended beyond local borders, as well. Under his guidance, First Institutional Baptist Church has remained mission-focused, supporting outreach efforts across Africa and even into India.
Here’s a short video that also helps show more of Dr. Warren’s legacy and leadership.
We are deeply grateful to continue our tradition of highlighting pastoral voices from the Valley at MissionConnexion Southwest. Thank you, Dr. Stewart, for your decades of leadership and your heart for the Gospel.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Pure Heart Church, November 7–8, as we welcome Dr. Stewart and hear the powerful message he will bring.
